SB 6-7: Quick Hits: Cutler and Barber

I recently watched a video on NFL network regarding Jay Cutler and the Bear's outlook for the epcoming season. In the video, many physical traits were discussed (footwork, etc.). But the biggest concern I have for Cutler is the mental side of his game. As a bronco, I never felt like he had the competitive drive to win football games. He is a fine talented young player but I would not like to have him on my team when the going gets rough. I think that this mentality of "Aww shucks" is due to his lack of winning at Vanderbuilt. Prior to last season, Cutler hadn't had a winning season since high school. This takes a toll on the psyche of a QB. Now that he has experienced a winning season and a playoff win, Cutler must take the next step and play through injuries that cost his team Super Bowl births.

As far as Tiki Barber is concerned, I am excited about the prospect of an older RB returning to the game. From a writer's standpoint I think it can be compelling, but I think that Barber will land in Washington and gain about 600-700 yards and 5 TD's.

SB 6/4: Quick Hits - DEN Season Outlook

For the Denver Broncos, provided we have football, I predict a 7-9 season. Orton will be traded and Tebow will throw for 18 TDs and rush for 5. 26 INTs.

SB 6-3: The Finals and more!
Alrighty. I have started mobile blogging or moblogging as I like to call it. We'll see how this works.

We have encountered many newsworthy things over the past month but most noteworthy for me are the NBA Finals and Tressel's Tossle at The Ohio State University.

Let's start with Tressel. From day one of "Tattoo-gate" I would have been shocked if Tressel kept his job. The guy obviously tried to preserve his image at the school when he admitted at the press conference his transgressions, but OSU obviously knew more sanctions were imminent and severed ties wisely with Tressel. I'm not sure when or if he'll ever find another job, but "The Vest" might make an interesting pro coach.

Moving on to the Finals which in my opinion is the Heat's to lose (which they kind of did last night). Miami obviously is the better team with less overall depth but more overall talent. A quite from Dallas' Tyson Chandler said that Dallas "has two starting fives," where as the Heat "have three players." Too bad for Chandler that those three players can out play the crotchety old Mavs any day. If they try. It's apparent that Miami isn't going to try every night to win and Dallas is the team to hang around if Miami decides to fly out to a lead and coast.

Dallas may get lucky if Miami employs the hare approach and the Mavs go at it "slow and steady," but ultimately I see this series ending in six with the Heat taking home the trophy.

SB7-1: Championships vs. Cash; Which can best the other in sports?

As July begins its scorching stretch, the free agent market in the NBA heats up also.

Two players opted out of their final contract years to pursue championships, another will "allegedly" resign with his team for more money.

In the NFL the Philadelphia Eagles' new cornerback Asante Samuel(formerly a member of the New England Patriots, and a beneficiary of a 6 year $57.14 million dollar contract) was cornered (no pun intended) by Patriots WR Wes Welker who claimed that Samuel chose money over championships.

This looming battle, possibly the most intense rivalry in sports, the money vs. the championships tears teams apart even before free agency does.

Barron Davis today opted out of his final year of 17.8 mil. with the Golden State Warriors and became a Los Angeles Clipper for 5 year and 65 million. Elton Brand, a former Clipper opted out of his contract today also; sources however say that he will stay in LA because Davis is there.

Regardless, these players are trying to win a championship; Davis took a 4 million dollar paycut to play in a "better market" whereas other NBA players like Gilbert Arenas wants wherever the highest bidding market is.

Arenas opted out of his contract today only to be offered a six year $100 plus million dollar contract with his former Wizard team and a 5 year, $100 mil contract from the Warriors. The Warriors aren't going to battle their way into the Western Conference playoffs without someone other than Arenas, and the Wizards are farther away than the Atlanta Hawks from the Eastern Oz and NBA Title they seek.

It is obvious that Arenas wants money, as does Samuel in the NFL.

The question, is in regards to this conflict: Is it a bad thing?

The world after all is ran on money, and trying to make a living is not too hard of a thing to understand.

Championships however are the true measure of which sports writers like myself compare great athletes. The question in regards to Samuel however is whether or not he needs anymore championships; Asante already possessed 3 rings, and the accusations by Welker are then less valuable when you consider that Welker has no rings.

Does Samuel need anymore rings?

Maybe not.

Does Arenas need that much money?

Maybe not.

Once in While

Apologies go out to everyone, if anyone who reads SportsBenter frequently and has wondered why dear Mr. Ben has not posted anything since Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

There are many things I would like to talk about locally, such as the Rockies horrible performance as well as the NBA draft among many things, but as I progress into the college life I have also evolved into a working young man and thus had fewer and fewer times to sit down and research and write.

More posts will come soon I promise.

SB8-16: Celtics lead 3-2; Can the Lakers do the impossible?

Last night, facing elimination in the NBA Finals the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics 103-98. The Lakers showed the world that they could win when they had to despite giving up 19 and 14 point leads to the Celtics in Game 5.

With the series shifting back to bean town, the question is: Can the Lakers win Game 6 and force Game 7? Can the Lakers win Game 7?

The Lakers have not shown that they can win in Staples let alone in the Garden, and their ever so famous bench has choked in Boston.

The Lakers will lose this series in 6, which brings up another shocking revelation which is the Celtics' stunning performance in the Finals.

Paul Pierce has definately been the MVP in these Finals; without him the Celtics would have been left for slaughter.

So the Celtics win Game 6 90-79 and Paul Pierce is the MVP.
